Bayfront Chaplain Doug Harrell’s Bayfront Baby StoryAt Christmas dinner, our daughter and her husband announced that they were moving home to Florida and that they were expecting their first child (our first grandchild) in July! Along with the first wave of excitement, I felt a wave of thankfulness that their baby might be born at Bayfront. Serving as a Chaplain here, I have seen first-hand the exceptional care and compassion of our doctors and nurses in Labor and Delivery. Little did we know seven months later, almost to the day, we would all be “put to the test.”
Early in her eighth month, our daughter developed pre-eclampsia, a condition that threatened the lives of our daughter and her baby due to dangerously high blood pressure. We were all very anxious but deeply confident in the medical staff’s knowledge and skill to protect mother and child.
After eight days on bed rest in the hospital, our daughter delivered the baby, weighing only 3lbs, 15oz, a month early. Due to some breathing difficulties, the baby was moved to intensive care at All Children’s Hospital. Named Walton Renee, the baby began nursing within two days and was home on the tenth day after birth. Laura’s blood pressure returned to normal within hours after delivery. She is healing well from her c-section. Walton continues to thrive and grow. Our family will always be thankful to God for the excellent care our daughter and her daughter received at Bayfront!
